What I’m Into: Lighting
If you follow me on Pinterest, you probably know that I pin a lot. I’m pinning different things for inspiration, for research and sourcing for future projects, or because I really need to buy something specific and am collecting ideas for when I’m ready to pull the trigger. One of those specific things is lighting. Almost every room in our house needs a lighting upgrade. That and the fact that a lot of our table and floor lamps are either hand-me-downs, were bought somewhat in haste or, we just need more of them. So I’m going to share with you what I’m into in terms of lighting. Maybe you will find this helpful. Or maybe I’ve just given you a reason to spend money. #sorrynotsorry
This is not a post on tips for how to incorporate lighting at home. I’m no expert. But, the basic rules are to have several sources of lighting per room (three or more), with each source serving a purpose (overhead, for reading, to light up a dark corner, etc.), and consider putting the main light on a dimmer.
I mentioned that every room in our house needs a lighting upgrade, and that is no joke. We have to replace the overhead lighting in the kitchen (I’d like a ceiling fan with lighting kit), the dining room, the office, guest bedroom and master bedroom, and we need to add overhead lighting to the living room. (You can see all of these rooms here.) The only lights I don’t want to switch out are in our bathrooms and the upstairs hallway because those lights are antiques, unique and I actually like them. We have, so far, only replaced one lighting fixture for which we had an electrician come and it really was an upgrade. But more on that when I get started on the One Room Challenge.
Anyway, here are the lighting fixtures I’m into split up by category. These are just a sampling so, to see all the lights I’ve been pinning, check out my Lighting board which I add to constantly.
Overhead Lighting (Pendants, Flush Mounts, Chandeliers)
This Miró chandelier by gymnastes on Etsy is sculptural, artistic, modern and unique, and I think would look beautiful over a dining room table. Doesn’t look like it gives off a ton of light, though, so you’d definitely need plenty of lighting elsewhere.
We only have 8 foot ceilings and our mudroom is just over 7 feet, aka we don’t have high ceilings. That means we have limited options for the types of lights we can have in certain rooms. I’m looking for flush mounts for the mudroom and this one from 2Modern caught my eye but it might be too glamorous. Not sure yet.
This CB2 flush mount has been my #1 pick for our master bedroom for ages. It’s just this side of too expensive for us right now and never seems to go on sale BUT I WANT IT AND IT WOULD LOOK SO PERFECT IN OUR ROOM.
I like this modern brass chandelier from Mod Creation Studio on Etsy. It’s definitely modern but has a slight gothic touch to it. It’s unique and I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it before. Would be great in the dining room.
When I first saw this Ay Illuminate pendant light, I thought, wow, this is really cool and different and I wish I could afford it. But now I’m starting to see it a little too much which is good and bad: it’ll probably have knock offs in the next year that I will be able to afford but then it also won’t be unique. So in the meantime, I’m just going to admire it from afar.
These Open Weave Pendants from West Elm (no longer available) are dreamy.
This probably costs a million dollars but I want this lukas/peet Orbit Light.
Yes please to this Tangled Chandelier from Schoolhouse Electric & Supply. Would be great for our dining room.
Floor Lamps
The tripod floor lamp has definitely been done and done and done, but these metallic floor shades of the Versanora Cara Tripod Floor Lamp at Target (no longer available) are making the style feel new and cool.
The hairpin legs in Mid-Century Modern design are ubiquitous and this lamp from World Market takes that on in a cool way.
The only question I have about this floor lamp from Crate and Kids (formerly Land of Nod) is should I get it in orange or blue?
Sconces
The Chelsea Double Sconce from Urban Outfitters (no longer available) is a knock-off of a mid-century modern design and I’ve had my eye on this type of wall sconce for a while now. I think it will look great in our office when I finally redo it a bit.
I like that this wall sconce from West Elm (no longer available) mixes both modern and traditional elements. It would be great in a library or office.
This one from Lowe’s is traditional meets glam, simple and gorgeous.
I love pewter and I love a lantern look so this one from The Mine (no longer available) is a top pick for an exterior light.
Table Lamps
I can’t get enough of the decor from Urban Outfitters. It doesn’t all make sense for adults but there are some great finds on their site. Everything is some combination of modern, contemporary, cheeky, fun and even sometimes sophisticated. I really like this Kira Table Lamp (no longer available), for example.
Someone posted to Instagram this marble and brass table lamp from Rough Luck Studio on Etsy and I nearly lost my mind. I love the profile of this lamp and it really makes a statement. It will never be in my price range but I love looking at it.
If this lamp from All Modern was half the price, I would have already bought it.
There’s a chance I bought a lamp or two while writing this post and I hope you are inspired too. Let me know if you have any questions about lighting or let me know if you want to buy me any or all of these, thanks!
