The Cozy Cottage

One Room Challenge Spring 2018 / Week 6: Entryway and Staircase Reveal

Color me pink because I have started and completed my first One Room Challenge! Now our entryway, staircase and upstairs landing are so much prettier, with a little bit of color and pattern, lots of texture and the additional function I was looking for. The One Room Challenge reveal is here! Are you ready?!

If you’ve just recently found The 256 Project, helloooo! My name is Régine, my husband and I bought #thecozycottage three years ago, and I write about how we’re making our house a home through food, renovation and design.

It’s been a busy six weeks, full of DIYs and new skills for me. You can see where I started and the reasoning behind the project in the Week 1 post here. Tackling the beadboard was the first major DIY, one I stressed about for months beforehand, which you can read about in the Week 2 post here. Then everything started to come together after a whole lot of white paint in Week 3, seen here. Two more big DIYs – creating a stair runner, here, and designing and hanging wallpaper on the back of the door, here – completed the space. Even though this was just a skinny makeover and not a full renovation, I really think this area of our house has been totally transformed.

And now for all the pretty pictures!

Here are photos of the downstairs:

The back of the door is covered in wallpaper I designed in Photoshop and had printed through Spoonflower. The rugs are runners from Ikea that I cut up into a design I created and installed. Both of these were detailed in previous One Room Challenge posts. We bought that bench years ago when we were living in Brooklyn from Recycled Brooklyn. It’s not on their website anymore, but you should check them out for their other work.

Both planters in front of the stained glass windows are from a little shop in Heidelberg, Germany. The wood carving is from Haiti. My aunt had it hanging in her old house and I’ve had it now for about 10 years. I’ve never had a good place to hang it until now. The painting is also from Haiti. I made the frame for the One Room Challenge but it came out so horribly that I painted it the same white that’s on the walls (Behr Powdered Snow); I had wanted it to be natural wood to tie into the other wood elements (the wood carving, stool, shelf and bench). Ah well. The vase is vintage and a beautiful color. The felt planter, vase and book binding of Orlando Soria’s “Get It Together” all tie into the wallpaper color downstairs.

You know what feels good? Seeing some before and afters, so here ya go:

Thanks for all the encouragement on this blog and on Instagram. It helped me get through my first One Room Challenge. Since I was doing a lot of things for the first time and making a few bold moves, I was nervous and stressed. But I think it turned out well. What do you think?

There’s been so much wonderful, inventive and creative design on the internets and social media thanks to the One Room Challenge. If you haven’t checked anyone else out yet, you should! Peep the featured designers here and my fellow guest participants here.
