Designer Spotlight: The Novogratz
You have probably heard of or seen the work of the Novogratz, the famous married design duo known for buying dilapidated buildings in New York City and turning them into glorious homes for themselves and their brood of seven kids. Perhaps you saw their old show on HGTV or Bravo. Perhaps you have seen them in any number of shelter magazines or read interviews with them over the years. Maybe you have most recently seen their latest major renovation, an old Hollywood castle that they completely made over upon moving to L.A. Wherever they’ve been, whatever their project, I have been a fan. Cortney and Robert Novogratz are the subject of this month’s Designer Spotlight.
If you don’t know them but want to know more about them, check out these articles in People, The New York Times, and Business Insider. Here’s why I love and admire their work: they have no particular style and can make anything and everything work together. They make color and pattern and grandiosity work in ways most people can’t. This goes for residential homes, workspaces and hotels.
They know how to use art and their definition of art is expansive.
Every room is so very layered and has a lot going on, but every element plays together so well, like in the after photo of this before-and-after:
Every space is a piece of art, even kids’ spaces, like this boys’ bedroom:
And if you think that all they do is color, oh no no no. They do neutrals so very well – and loud – too.
