One Room Challenge: One Year Later
It’s been a full year since I participated in my first One Room Challenge, the bi-annual design event where 20 featured designers and hundreds of guest participants make over or renovate one room over the course of six weeks, and I thought this would be a good time to share with you how the projects I did for the challenge are holding up as well as check in with this spring 2019 One Room Challenge.
Last year, I worked on our entryway and staircase, a part of our house that was perfectly fine but kind of boring, which is saying a lot considering the beautiful stained glass windows and original oak flooring. Over the course of six weeks, I added beadboard to the walls, DIYed a stair runner, painted, and designed and installed wallpaper on the interior side of our front door. To see all the DIYs and details, see the reveal post here. So, how are they all faring after a full year of lots of wear?
The beadboard is doing well. It was my first time doing any kind of woodwork and using numerous power tools so there are definitely errors all over the place but the beadboard looks as good as it did when I finished it.
The stair runner is experiencing the most wear and tear as two adults and one dog walk up and down it numerous times a day and night. As you can see from the below photo, part of it has come up so I need to reattach it, and parts of it are fraying. If I were to do this again, I either wouldn’t choose a woven rug since that will fray easily when cut even though I used carpet tape, or I wouldn’t cut the rug so there would be less chance of fraying.
The wallpaper still makes me happy and it elicits all kinds of reactions when people see it for the first time but, to be honest, it’s a total mess. The main reason is that you are supposed to apply wallpaper only to flat surfaces and this door has panels and beveling. If I were to do it again, I would paint the entire door the main background color of the wallpaper and then only put wallpaper on the flat raised surfaces of the door. I think that would have been a cleaner look. But, no regrets.
The spring 2019 One Room Challenge is going on now with 20 featured designers and many guest participants. There are a number of designers and participants I’m following and I can’t wait to see their final projects.
Murphy Deesign and Jessica Brigham are both working on their kitchens.
Mandi at Vintage Revivals is, once again, working on some awesome DIYs.
I was totally wowed by Veronica Solomon of Casa Vilora Interiors work on the last One Room Challenge where she renovated her bathroom so I’m excited to see what she does in her master bedroom.
I’m also interested in House of Funk‘s daughter’s bedroom, Homemade by Carmona‘s family room, The Farmhouse Project‘s master bedroom, Dorsey Designs‘ living area, and Casework‘s bathroom.

You should mention the fact that your husband is super happy with the runner because he hasn’t fallen down the stairs and died and also carrying a brand new baby down stairs is vertigo inducing enough without slippery socks on slippery wood, so the runner is really actually the best
Lol, thanks husband. You’re right: that runner is the best. Great idea!
