Giving Tuesday Gift Guide

‘Tis the season over here on The 256 Project! We’re talking all about the holidays and gifts to get for yourself and others, creative solutions to some holiday decorating dilemmas, and now we’re talking Giving Tuesday, a day dedicated to donating to causes, nonprofits, public organizations and charities who could use the extra funds to help people, places and animals in need. Giving is a part of our lives all year round and here I’m sharing a short, not at all comprehensive list of a dozen organizations we have donated to in the past or have a recurring monthly donation set up. If you don’t currently donate to any organizations or would like to add to your list, hopefully the below will inspire you! And if you have any suggestions for me to add to our list, please share in the comments below!

I couldn’t figure out a way to neatly categorize these organizations, so I just listed them alphabetically. Also, please note, listed here are only organizations to which donations are tax deductible just to keep this simple.

  1. 4 Paws for Ability – Enriches the lives of children with disabilities by training and placing quality, task-trained service dogs.
  2. Blessings in a BackpackBlessings in a Backpack mobilizes communities, individuals, and resources to provide food on the weekends for elementary school children across America who might otherwise go hungry.
  3. Coalition for the Homeless – The nation’s oldest advocacy and direct service organization helping homeless men, women and children secure affordable housing, sufficient food and the chance to work for a living wage through litigation, public education and direct services.
  4. Every Mother CountsWorking to achieve quality, respectful, and equitable maternity care for all by giving grants and working with partners and thought leaders to increase awareness and mobilize communities to take action. Every Mother Counts’ mission is to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother, everywhere.
  5. Heifer International – Works locally, alongside the communities it serves, providing livestock and training in sustainable agricultural and business practices to create the most opportunity for the individuals and communities with whom they partner.
  6. International Medical Response – Supplements, supports and enhances healthcare systems in communities across the world that have been incapacitated by natural disaster, extreme poverty, and/or regional conflict.
  7. Kiva – An international nonprofit, founded in 2005 in San Francisco, with a mission to expand financial access to help underserved communities thrive by crowdfunding loans and unlocking capital for the underserved, improving the quality and cost of financial services, and addressing the underlying barriers to financial access around the world. Through Kiva’s work, students can pay for tuition, women can start businesses, farmers are able to invest in equipment and families can afford needed emergency care.
  8. ProPublica – An independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism with moral force. We dig deep into important issues, shining a light on abuses of power and betrayals of public trust — and we stick with those issues as long as it takes to hold power to account.
  9. Sierra Club – Grassroots environmental organization fighting for Earth’s natural resources, such as securing protection for 439 parks and monuments, winning passage of the Clean Air and Endangered Species Acts, putting over 281 coal plants on the path to replacement with clean energy, and securing the right of every kid in America to visit a national park.
  10. The Trevor Project – Founded in 1998 by the creators of the Academy Award®-winning short film TREVOR, The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) young people under 25.
  11. Wounded Warrior Project – Serve veterans, caregivers and families of veterans who incurred a physical or mental injury or illness on or after September 11, 2001.
  12. Your local fire and rescue squad, public library, arts program, etc.

Hope this inspires you to donate to a worthwhile cause this Giving Tuesday, or any day or month of the year and don’t forget to share your own charity ideas below!
