2020 Design Trends Cheat Sheet

There have been plenty of stories going around about the design trends we should expect to see this year and in the 2020s overall. My favorites are the idea of home-as-sanctuary, i.e. design being tied to wellness and what makes you feel good, as well as the return of color, color and more color! There are a few other design trends worth knowing about so I’ve put together this cheat sheet for 2020 design trends.

Authenticity – Uniqueness in home decor, architecture and design that reflects individuality, so designing homes to reflect your own personality and creating spaces that tell your own story, rather than what the trends say.

Biophilic Design – Biophilic means a hypothetical human tendency to interact or be closely associated with other forms of life in nature. Thanks dictionary.com for that definition! Having design that increases connectivity to nature directly or indirectly, such as through a living wall or a biomontage wall will be on trend this year, which has health, environmental, and economic benefits.

Classicism – Here’s another assist from dictionary.com. Classicism is the following of ancient Greek or Roman principles and style in art and literature, generally associated with harmony, restraint, and adherence to recognized standards of form and craftsmanship, especially from the Renaissance to the 18th century. We are moving more and more away from Midcentury Modern design, which really took a hold on home decor the past decade, and moving more to antiques to reflect this turn toward classicism.

Earth Tones – Say good-bye to gray and the cool neutrals that took over the design world in the 2010s. 2020 is all about earth tones like chocolate brown, wine, olive green, and yellow ochre. It’s all about warm colors found in nature.

Grandmillennial Style – It’s traditional design with a twist, classic design like chinoiserie, scallops, natural fiber rugs, topiaries, and more, but with a contemporary edge.

Monochromatic – When the ceilings, all the walls, and all the trim are painted in the same color. And in 2020 and this new decade, that color will be as bold as can be!

Organic Shapes – Free-form shapes and curvy and rounded shapes are going to take over interior design in 2020 and the following years, from shapes and thickness of furniture, to designs of rugs and wallpaper and other decor.

Sustainability – Sustainably harvested materials like acacia and rattan will become more and more prevalent in home decor.

I hope you found this cheat sheet of 2020 design trends to be helpful. Do any of these pique your interest? To read more details about all of the predicted 2020 design trends, check out these stories in Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Forbes, and Dwell.
