Spring Refresh: 5 Easy Updates

We are getting closer and closer to spring, which is a natural time to start cleaning and organizing, and then to start decorating to get ready for the warmth, sun and longer days. I’ve already got one monster of an organization project I’m planning to tackle (see here), but this is also the season to refresh a few areas of the home. If you need a little inspiration or a few ideas for a spring refresh of your exterior, here are five easy updates.

  1. Power wash – I did this to our garage and the porch area of our house a few years ago and it really made a difference. Of course, you can do a much bigger power washing job or hire a company to do it, but for an easy and inexpensive DIY you can do what I did. I bought a few bottles of an exterior cleaning solution, hooked it up to the hose and nozzle, and spent some time spraying the areas that were the dirtiest. I plan to do the same again this year.
  2. Paint your front door – I painted our door several years ago and it really made a difference in how I viewed our house. In my mind, our exterior went from looking pretty drab to all of a sudden having a personality. If this is something you’ve been thinking of, I highly recommend making the effort.
  3. Create atmosphere – Our street is so dark and our house barely gives off any light, so we added string lights years ago. Not only did this illuminate the front of our house and part of our street, but it also has given our front porch this romantic, atmospheric glow. We actually just refreshed them by switching out the old string lights since they died and adding new LED lights. I think this refresh will be better in the long run since the bulbs of the old string lights kept dying and these cafe lights shouldn’t.
  4. Refresh your decor – The front of your home needs a little decor too! I spray painted our house numbers and mailbox when we moved here to give them a little oomph, so that’s one option. Another is to get a new set of house numbers and a new mailbox. Feeling like you want to take on a DIY? Try swapping out the locks and knob for something that you find more attractive. Also, don’t forget that doormats don’t have to be boring! And adding plants, whether it’s several small ones or one huge planter, depending on what fits your space, goes a long way.
  5. Inside the front door – Don’t forget the inside of your front door matters too. I know I certainly haven’t! This is especially perfect if you’re a renter. Add plants, a seasonal wreath and a beautiful doormat to your interior entry and, bam!, instant spring refresh.
