The Cozy Cottage

Outdoor Artwork

You know how much I love designing our outside as much as I do our inside and how we treat our exterior spaces like an extension of our interior. Well, that thinking shouldn’t just be about the best outdoor dining table, right? That thinking extends to outdoor artwork as well.

I’ll be honest and say I stare at our house a lot and think of all the ways I’d like to improve it. I’ve mentioned the porch fairly recently, but also we would like to replace the vinyl siding with something more modern and change the exterior color. But while we’re living with this pale gray vinyl siding, I’m always looking at different areas where we can make it prettier. Well, my mother-in-law unwittingly presented me with an opportunity when she sent me a 1,000 piece puzzle recently.

Throughout a week of nights and baby nap times, I thoroughly enjoyed putting together this colorful puzzle of different front doors, and it was a great way to do something different during this pandemic. And the minute I finished it, I knew exactly what I would do with it.

Maybe it’s a bit too on the nose to hang a photo of doors near our front door, but I had been thinking of different types of artwork to hang in this very spot and this puzzle ended up being perfect. In case you’re wondering, another idea I had was to take very large format numbers of our house number and wrap them in fake greenery and flowers so we would have a large, floral art display of our house numbers hanging above those chairs. Maybe I’ll still do that another time.

This puzzle is just one idea of outdoor artwork. Here are a few other ideas, in case you’re interested in zhushing up your exterior walls too.

Try some word art like these exterior spaces below.

Instead of an art gallery wall, try a hanging planter gallery wall, like Whitney Leigh Morris of Tiny Canal Cottage.

Add shelves and a mixture of objects and plants, like Lindsey Marlor.

Or, if you truly want to go bold and make a huge impact on your exterior walls, check out the mural that Racheal Jackson, aka Banyan Bridges, did to this house exterior. You can see more of this project here.

If you have an outdoor space, I highly recommend treating your exterior walls as you would your interior. Outdoor artwork brings a smile to even the smallest of faces.
