New Rug and Kids’ Room Inspiration

When I designed the nursery 2.5 years ago, I created a gender neutral space with bright, happy color. Now I’m looking at the next phase of this room as our 2 year old is already trying to climb out of his crib! At the same time, we decided it was time to get rid of the rug that was in the room. So now we have a new rug and I’m collecting inspiration for what this kid’s room will look like.

The rug that was in the room was falling apart and hard to vacuum so no point in waiting to switch it up. I was looking for a rug that would work in a gender neutral kid’s room but that would be so good, I’d want to steal it for another space in the house. I wanted a rug that was cushiony below the feet with some thickness, but not a shag rug.

I had been searching for rugs like this for months! But finally I found it, this Dash Abstract Handmade Tufted Wool Ivory/Blue Area rug from All Modern. The pile is almost half an inch, so it’s thick enough to feel good underfoot but not so thick that it nears shag rug territory. It came, I saw it, it’s perfect. You can see in the top photo how it fits in with the already decorated space AND it has the right colors and vibe that I’m pretty sure will work for the next version of this bedroom.

So what is that bedroom going to look like? Well, I’m not ready to draw up a moodboard yet but I do have some ideas, like building an upholstered headboard that also will serve as artwork. I guess that’s my new thing? Also, I’d like to repaint with new color and pattern, and there will be a twin bed and more shelving.

So while I hope we’re still a ways from this bigger boy room, I am collecting some kid’s room inspiration, like the following.

As you can see, my plan with his room is to keep up the color and pattern as we transition to the next stage of his life. What do you think?
