Kitchen Renovation: Progress Update

We are seven weeks into the kitchen renovation at The Cozy Cottage and so much has happened since I last shared about it here. We have what looks like an almost functioning kitchen seven weeks after demo started! I’ve shared weekly updates on Instagram but I thought, for record keeping purposes, it would be good to share the week-by-week process here. We are so close to being almost done, there’s just one kind of big hold up.

And that hold up is the countertop and we have been waiting weeks for it. Without that, we can’t be plumbed to start using our sink and we basically can’t move back into the kitchen and start using it because there’s nothing protecting the lower cabinets from getting dirty on the inside. So we are currently in a holding pattern. But here is the kitchen renovation progress update week by week so far.

Week 1 – Total gut job, down to the studs, exposing the original brick fireplace that was then turned into the gas range area at some point in history, exposing the subfloor to discover that there isn’t reusable wood flooring (we were hoping there would be), opening up a pass through window from the kitchen into the front room, fixing the header that was poorly done in a previous renovation, removing the old non-working window to make room for a new casement window, starting the plumbing and adding all new electrical and high hats. It was an impressive first week!

Week 2 – Drywall, drywall, drywall. It took several days and really helped the first floor feel so new.

Week 3 – Cabinets installed and discovered we had room for an additional lower cabinet so we ordered one more, the new casement window put in, tiled flooring in, oven range in and hooked up, fridge back in place in the kitchen, ready for countertop templater to come. And this is where the countertop hold up begins. We couldn’t get a templater to come for another two and a half weeks.

Week 4 – White paint! Upper cabinet pulls arrived, and we had to order a new dishwasher because the one we had originally ordered was on backorder (eventually, I will post a full source list).

Week 5 – Nothing all week until countertop templater came.

Week 6 – Nothing all week until we saw our countertop design and layout and learned our countertop wouldn’t be in for another 10-15 business days.

Week 7 – Nothing, just waiting, which I’m not good at. Still no update on when countertop will be installed. We knew going into the renovation that we would encounter a delay at some point because that’s how renovations go, and the design and construction industry has been experiencing longer lead times than usual and lots of delays. But the bad customer service of this company is what is aggravating me the most.

And that is the kitchen renovation progress update to where we are now. The space itself is looking good, we’re just waiting, waiting, waiting.
