Updating Our Primary Bedroom

With the new year, I’ve got my sights set on giving ourselves a “new” primary bedroom with a few updates to finally finish up the space.

Where We’ve Been

We’ve done a lot in that space since moving in, but, in truth, the color and sheen of paint that set the tone for the room has been wrong from the beginning. I was inspired by a beautiful ocean teal that I saw in a story in domino and went from there. You can read about that here. It really was too bright and we should have gone with a flat or matte sheen. But we continued to make progress on our bedroom over the years, like getting a new mattress (here), hiring California Closets to build a new closet and looking into doors (here), DIYing a headboard (here) and swapping out a dated light fixture (here).

Where We’re Going

What set off the new direction for the primary bedroom are new pillow covers I was given that are pattered in creams and browns. I also had been wanting this Chris Loves Julia x Loloi Polly Checkered rug, which I got on a big sale at Wayfair. With the purchase of this rug, we finally have a rug in our bedroom that is the right size for the space and I think helps elevate the room. Purchasing the rug also helped me check off one item from my 2022 bedroom to do list. The top photo shows how our room looks now.

The Moods Inspiring the Bedroom

For 2023, I’d finally like to install closet curtains or doors and repaint. I’m drawing inspiration from the following bedroom moods.

Bedroom by Chris Loves Julia

Bedroom by Sarah Sherman Samuel

Bedroom by Bigger Than the Three of Us
