Nursery: The Reveal

I shared with you our baby news, introduced you to the nursery project, shared the floor plan, inspiration photos and moodboard (all here), and then went through the building blocks of our nursery design (here). Now it’s time for the nursery reveal. Are you ready?

But first! Tee hee. Don’t mean to be a tease, but wouldn’t it be fun to see the befores before seeing the after?

Here’s how the room looked the first year we lived here:

We stayed in this room for the first month of living in the house before the renovation.

Then here’s how it looked after I transformed it into the flex guest room/studio:

You can read more about that room makeover here and here.

And now, it’s the nursery!

There’s the crib from Oeuf that was handed down to us by a neighbor, fitted with these fun French fry sheets from Spearmint Love (no longer available). My goddaughter knitted us that blanket that is draped over the railing. The rug is what we had in the room before. The watercolor is by artist Katrina Pete who sells her paintings on Etsy and was a gift from Daniel for or first wedding anniversary.

In the corner to the left of the crib is the Ekby shelf from Ikea that we also had there before, currently home to a muppet I made for the dude back in our early dating years and a toy a neighbor gave us. On the floor is a basket from World Market that holds all the blankets and quilts we have for baby, including my own baby blanket and a blanket that a family friend crocheted for Daniel when he was a kid.

This is the Ikea Tarva dresser that I mentioned in a previous post, painted in Spearmints by Behr in a high gloss finish. I swapped out the pulls for leather ones I found on Etsy to make the dresser a little more masculine. The dresser is topped with a changing pad and sheets from Amazon. The mirror is from Target and has curves to help balance out all the straight lines in the room, what with the dresser, crib, rug and painting all being rectangles.

In the corner to the left of the dresser is another basket from World Market that we’re using as a laundry basket, as well as a garbage can from Amazon for all those icky diapers. Hanging above the corner is the pendant light.

About that light. The room originally had a boring and unattractive flush mount (you can see it in the first photo within this post) and I wanted to replace it with a light fixture that would cast shapes and shadows on the walls and ceilings when lit. It had to be on budget and something that I haven’t seen a million times on social media. It would have been better to find a flush or semi-flush mount to keep the light fixture centered in the room and because we only have 8 ft ceilings. On our budget and timeline, I found a pendant light from Ikea that I really like but it’s quite large. (It looks like it’s no longer available but here’s a similar version.) The only way to make it work in the room was to swag it toward a corner. Because it’s in a corner, it’s mostly out of the way. Here is the light fixture at night:

Because the main fixture is in a corner, it was important to bring another light source that gives off a lot of light to the opposite corner. I stole a table lamp from our living room that I got at Target years ago and put it on the bookshelf for this reading corner. I chose this bookshelf from Crate & Barrel Kids because I wanted something with a flat top shelf at the right height to act as a side table to the rocking chair since there isn’t room for a side table as well as a bookshelf.

The rocking chair is from a friend who got it as a hand-me-down from her grandfather. The quilt was a handmade gift from Daniel’s dad’s cousin. The blackout shades and curtains are from Ikea.

Pictured below is another watercolor from Katrina Pete. The colors match the rest of the room perfectly. The fan is vintage from Shop Midcentury Modest and the mirror is from Urban Outfitters. All three pieces were in the guest room previously.

Behind the cute elephant towel is the door to the closet, which I wrote about here.

And that’s the nursery, folks! I hope you like what you see. Share questions and comments below.
