Friday Faves

Friday Faves: Baking Bread

We are now at the end of week 2 of when many of us around the country all started working, schooling and daycaring from home. At this point, the days are blending into each other but I promise you that it is, in fact, Friday. And while I try to determine what we can do to make Saturday and Sunday feel truly different from Monday through Friday, I have a few favorites to share with you ahead of the weekend.

Baking Bread

I made bread for the first time and it actually turned out good! I’m sure many of you have been making bread for years and are laughing at all of us who are hopping on the bandwagon now that we’re all stuck at home. That’s fine, I get it! But I’m also really excited how easy it was and how good it came out. I used a King Arthur Flour recipe, which you can see here. The results are these images. It filled up the house with this wonderful aroma and they are even moist days later.

I’m planning to do my own starter soon since stores are out of yeast and hope to bake some type of bread for sandwiches and snacks maybe every week or every other week. Friends sent me recipes that I plan to try soon, like this one and this one.

I also made carrot bread, which requires no yeast, and it was very good and moist for a full week. I used this recipe but kept out all the spices and the only add-in I used was grated carrots. August loves bread and loves to eat so it’s handy having these types of homemade snacks, especially when I can get vegetables in it.

Emotional Pick-Me-Ups

I can’t even tell you how happy I was to join in on the dance party created by DJ D-Nice on Instagram. You can read more about what he’s doing here. I danced from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday listening to his 9-hour set from the evening before. He is playing these sets on Instagram Live so check out his Instagram for the latest updates in case you’d like to be a part of this global party.

Businesses and people doing good gives me moments of happiness throughout the day, and I’m on the lookout for those types of moments as much as possible. Here’s one: Lowe’s commits $25 million to help communities impacted by the pandemic, including $10 million in product donations to medical professionals on the frontlines. Here’s another: people are making masks to help medical professionals on the frontlines.

The world is topsy turvy and so many of us are doing our best to #stayhome and practice #socialdistancing and that comes with a whole lot of emotional ups and downs. What makes you happy these days to help keep you sane during these crazy times?
