Friday Faves: Helpful information on renovations, rethinking chinoiserie, fighting housing security in the LGBT+ community, and more

I kicked off the Kitchen Renovation series this month, so naturally I have kitchens on the brain. I’ve got a few good kitchen renovation tips, house tours, LGBTQ+ resources, a cocktail recipe and more in this month’s Friday Faves.

ICYMI, here is the Kitchen Renovation series introduction where I talk about how we’ve started this process. Next, I’ll be sharing the architectural drawings and cabinet drawings, and inspiration images. In the meantime, here are different stories and information on kitchens that I think are cool and helpful:

  1. Wit & Delight also is in the middle of a kitchen renovation that I can’t wait to see since her house is so unique and beautiful.
  2. Jean Brownhill, founder of contractor finder site Sweeten, talked on the Design Time podcast, about what you need to know and have ready before you demolish anything for a renovation.
  3. Emily Henderson shared crowdsourced information on renovation mistakes to avoid here.

I added some new art to our home, as seen in the top photo. This is a total shameless plug for my goddaughter, who sells custom embroidery and tufted rugs/wall hangings. Check her out here and here.

Check out this stunning, simple, eco-friendly house tour from Rue Magazine. And here’s a modern home tour of a small house similar in size to The Cozy Cottage, courtesy of 600 Sq. Feet and a Baby.

Here’s a good read on rethinking chinoiserie from Elle Decor. This particularly struck me: “My reading of chinoiserie is that it’s ‘Asian’ in facsimile,” the architect Michael K. Chen says. “The way that chinoiserie is deployed in interiors is something that I am a little reflexively allergic to. As a component of a ‘traditional’ interior, it seems to highlight the question: Whose tradition are we talking about?”

A couple other topics to look into:

  2. How to help fight housing insecurity in the LGBTQ+ community, here

A friend sent me this recipe for a cocktail called a Dino Sour because she knows Gus is obsessed with dinosaurs.

And, with that, cheers to the weekend!
