Playroom Moodboard and Living Room Decor Ideas

I’m back with another moodboard and more living room decor ideas as we revamp the hang out spaces at The Cozy Cottage, and this time I’m focusing on a flex space that serves as a playroom and living room. To catch up on what we’re doing with the first floor, check out last week’s post on the TV room moodboard.

Jumping Off Point

We have a small home – we don’t call it The Cozy Cottage for nothing! – and we tend to create flex spaces in as many areas as possible, so you might find this moodboard helpful in sparking decor ideas no matter how you call your spaces, whether it’s a family room or designated playroom. As part of our kitchen renovation, our front living room was changed significantly since we opened up a pass-through window and countertop seating into this room. That means that almost everything in this front living room can be seen from the kitchen (as evidenced by the top photo) so whatever we brought into the room had to coordinate. Another thing to know is that the sofa we had in here was broken so we were on the hunt for another one.

We decided to turn this into our flex playroom/living room/bar area. I know these seem like two uses at cross purposes, but we need to make choices based on where things fit. We’ve gotten quite adept at making small space living work for us (see here for how we turned our garage into living space, for example).

Same as the other living room, I envisioned this as a place with a lot of color mostly through furniture and decor to pop off a more neutral background. But one big thing to note is that this living room, which was already painted white, also has a non-working fireplace painted hot yellow.

Pulling It Together

To make the front room work as the new playroom/living room/bar area, we brought in some of what we had from a previously created playroom and other rooms in the house, bought a new black and white rug to tie into the shag rug of the TV room, and ordered a new loveseat from Interior Define in navy blue. We tested out the sofa in person, ordered it in November to take advantage of holiday sales and it should arrive by May.

We needed to order a new bar since we lost cabinet space during the kitchen renovation, so we have ordered one that is on its way. We also are waiting on new artwork and will decide if we need any more toy storage after all the furniture arrives.

Moodboard and Inspiration

While we aren’t getting everything in the below moodboard, it shows the feeling we’re trying to create, mixing bold color and patterns with neutrals, and creating both an adult and a kid space in one. If you’re into this overall design and aesthetic, hopefully you’ll find this moodboard helpful to you.

I’m looking forward to when the flex playroom/living room/bar area is complete! I’ll share progress photos along the way on Instagram and final photos here when all the furniture and artwork are in. Let me know if you find these types of moodboards helpful!
